Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a Management Leader or Decision Maker?

Technology and particularly Artificial Intelligence allows leaders to be more engaged and influential, but it also challenges them to be more dynamic, more in touch with innovation, and more knowledgeable in a world where information is literally at everyone’s fingertips. In 1955, at a conference at Dartmouth College where computer science researcher Professor John McCarthy coined the term “AI” or Artificial intelligence in a discussion of thinking machines. Not much was known about AI or Artificial Intelligence at the time but that has since changed.

Jussupow et al., (2018) stated that Artificial Intelligence (AI) can be defined as “a system that supports and improves decision making” in big data processing, prediction, and feedback integration. (, p. 2). In addition, Jussupow et al., 2018, noted furthermore, these systems can help to identify new portals of knowledge and extend rules in complex, ever-changing environments.

Neural networks, robotics, natural language processing and game playing and parallel processing are all part AI and the fifth generation. Yes, AI has impressive computation prowess. AI is moving closer to approach human-like ability for vision, learning, the ability to constantly engage with clients, and adaptability.

Smart leaders are wise to harness the power of AI to extend the breadth of their influence by using those insights and analysis capabilities to find better solutions to existing problems. As the world keeps evolving, the best leaders will recognize those evolutions as more tools they can employ to keep their employees motivated, engaged, and happy to perform at a peak level.

Now, as we move into a new era where Artificial Intelligence (AI) is appearing in almost every industry, we again will see shifts in how decisions are made, driven by increasingly sophisticated levels of information derived through big data and various types of learning algorithms. As a result, managers will be asked to consider this evolving source of information in their choices, groups will be expected to factor in how AI will ‘participate’ in the groups’ decisions and individuals will be asked to sometimes step back from their stated roles and defer to the decisions derived from the ‘machine’/AI.

Are leaders ready for this type of integration…well, yes, it is already here.
